Manual identification
How to correct or set identification fields by hand when the AI gets it wrong (or you skip it).
Last updated May 11, 2026
The AI is right almost all the time. When it isn't — or when you'd rather just type the card details yourself — manual identification is one click away on any card detail page.
When to use it
- AI got it wrong. Set, number, or variant is off. Happens most often on regional releases, error variants, and very recent products that aren't yet in the training data.
- AI was uncertain. Card lands in
Needs review. Confirm or replace the suggestion. - You want to skip AI entirely. Some dealers prefer to type set + number from memory for known cards. Faster than waiting on a queue for cards you know cold.
- Custom card or proxy. Sometimes you legitimately need to list a one-off or art card. Manual identification is the only path.
How to do it
- Open the card detail page (
/cards/<id>). - In the Identification block, click Edit identification.
- The fields that open up are the same ones the AI fills: set, set code, year, number, player, variant, grade (if graded). Type or paste your values.
- Click Save. The card's
workflow_statusmoves toidentified. - Click Pull price (in the same block) to refresh PriceCharting + eBay sold comps against the new identification.
What's required vs optional
The vault is permissive on identification — none of the fields are individually required at the schema level. Different downstream features need different subsets:
- eBay listings require at minimum a title (the Listing Template can resolve this from set + player + number).
- Price lookup works best with set + number, or set + player + variant.
- Workflow status
identifiedrequires non-empty set OR title.
Bulk manual ID
For batches where the AI fails on most cards (uncommon — usually a rough scan), you can mark every card in the batch as Needs review and then use the batch's Bulk edit identification mode to set common fields (e.g. all from the same set) in one pass.
Re-identifying a card
If you change the photo or the card's been mis-identified for a while, you can request a fresh AI run. From the card detail page, in the Identification block, click the menu and choose Re-identify. This will burn one identification credit. Use sparingly — repeated re-IDs against an unidentifiable card don't change the answer.
